Amriti vs Jalebi: What Is the Difference?
Amriti and jalebi look alike but are made differently. Here is how to tell them apart.

Ask someone to describe a bright, syrup-soaked spiral sweet and they will usually say "jalebi". But many mithai counters in Pakistan also sell its close cousin, amriti. They look similar, yet they are not the same sweet.
How jalebi is made
Jalebi is made from a fermented flour batter piped into loose spirals, fried until crisp and soaked in syrup. It is thin, crunchy and slightly tangy from the fermentation.
How amriti is made
Amriti (also called imarti) is usually made from a lentil batter, piped into a more ornate, flower-like ring with small loops around the edge. After frying and soaking it is thicker, softer and chewier than jalebi, with a deeper colour.
Side by side
- Batter: jalebi uses fermented flour batter; amriti uses a lentil batter.
- Shape: jalebi forms loose spirals; amriti forms a neat ring with decorative loops.
- Texture: jalebi is crisp; amriti is soft and slightly chewy.
