How to Store Mithai: A Freshness Guide for Pakistani Sweets

Bought a box of mithai and not sure how to keep it? Different sweets need different care. Here is a simple guide. Always follow the date and storage note on your box first.

Dry sweets

Patisa, soan papdi, katli, barfi, ladoo and halwa tikkis keep best in a closed, airtight box at room temperature, away from heat and sunlight. Examples: Plain Patisa, Soan Papdi, Cashew Katli.

Syrup sweets

Gulab jamun, rasgulla and cham cham should stay in their syrup, covered, and kept in the fridge if you are not eating them the same day. Warm gulab jamun gently before serving if you like them soft. See Gulab Jamun and Rasgulla.

Milk sweets and desserts

Rasmalai, kheer, khoya-based pedas and malai sweets should always be refrigerated and eaten within the time on the pack. See Rasmalai Cup and Khoya Pedas.

Halwa

Soft halwas such as Walnut Halwa keep well in a sealed container. Warm a portion gently before serving for the best flavour.

Cakes, pastries and ice cream

These are fresh and chilled products. At Suleman Sweets & Bakers they are available for pickup from our branches only and are not delivered, so they reach you in perfect condition.

Quick rules

  • Keep boxes closed; air makes dry sweets soft and soft sweets dry.
  • Don't stack heavy boxes on delicate sweets.
  • When in doubt, refrigerate milk-based sweets.

Suleman Sweets & Bakers is the Gujranwala family business founded by the late Haji Suleman and led today by Irfan Suleman and Asad Suleman.
